Light in the Dark

CHILDREN IN DIASTER - LIGHT IN THE DARK

set & stage | humanitarian education | rescuer in earthquake

This project is a combination of storytelling, set & stage and exhibition design. It aims to educate young teenagers about the spirit of humanitarianism through a one-hour experiencing activity. Our group is responsible to design one of the two storylines under the theme ‘Children in Disaster’.

The concept of ‘Light in the dark’ is inspired by the rescue process in Si-Chuan earthquake. Light signifies victims’ hope in a disaster – rescuer. The storyline is based on the role of rescuer as a principal character to compose a series of plots. In the story, participants are guided by rescuer actors to experience a virtual story about the situation after earthquake. We grasped the key essences of survival in disaster that become the main idea of the design. Combining simulation and abstract elements as the design strategy, our design intends to introduce a new perspective for participants to experience the story of rescue team in a simulated earthquake environment. The final objective is for the public to understand the attitudes and spirit of rescue teams; to raise awareness of disaster risk; and to enhance public resilience in disaster.
